The Boeing Employees Soaring Club (BESC) annual Ephrata encampment was scheduled from 7-14 June 2003, and we were rewarded with great weather and outstanding soaring in the early part of the week. I had a great time sampling the 10-knot (1,000 FPM) lift in the new BESC L-33.
Our efforts in the early part of the week included getting a number of club members checked out in practice off-field landings, using our favorite target about 12 miles north of Ephrata - Eric's farm. It's dusty, but huge. After three off-field landings, including de-rigging, trailering back to Ephrata, and re-rigging again, Rich Blow set out near sunset to accomplish the last off-field landing of the day. After being forcibly released from tow and still not realizing the field was directly below him, Rich found the waiting crew and finally set up for a beautiful approach and landing at the new 'Rich Blow Memorial Airport'.
